Our Pic-Plus stone fruit trial results are featured in the September issue of NZ Grower & Orchardist

TriCal New Zealand is pleased to share the results of a Pic-Plus fumigation trial conducted in a replanted stone fruit orchard in Hawke’s Bay.

The trial assessed early tree growth and changes in the soil microbiome following soil fumigation. After the first year, trees planted in Pic-Plus soil-fumigated rows showed up to 194% greater growth in trunk circumference compared with trees planted in untreated rows.

The soil microbiome assessment also found increases of more than 80% in representative beneficial bacteria and 180% in representative beneficial fungi following soil fumigation.

The full trial results, including the crop and soil microbiome assessments, are featured in the September 2026 issue of NZ Grower & Orchardist.

Today, TriCal Group is proud to spotlight Juan P. Cristofalo, Agronomist with our affiliated company, TriCal New Zealand.

Juan began his journey with Leicester’s in November 2023 before continuing with TriCal NZ. This November, he’ll celebrate three years with the company.

Juan chose agronomy because it combined his interest in working outdoors with his passion for agriculture. Today, he enjoys conducting trials, analyzing results, and helping growers develop effective crop protection strategies.

At TriCal NZ, Juan conducts crop trials, assesses soil microbiomes, supports integrated crop protection programs, and works with customers and colleagues to develop solutions for soil-borne pests and beneficial soil microorganisms following soil fumigation.

One accomplishment he’s especially proud of is being part of a team that continues to overcome challenges and reach new goals. This year, that included beginning work in kiwifruit orchards despite industry and market barriers.

Juan believes agronomists play a vital role in helping growers produce higher-quality yields from limited agricultural land. He sees the combination of modern crop protection and biological solutions as key to feeding a growing global population.

Outside of work, Juan enjoys time with his family, fishing, and his aquarium hobby.
