What is a Carolona Strongback?
‘Carolina Strongback’ is a new rootstook material for grafting watermelon. It has resistance to Fusarium wilt races 1 and 2, as well as tolerance to root knot nematodes.
Carolina Strongback was derived from two wild and seed production. watermelon species, each with resistance to Fusarium wilt race 1 and 2, with targeted selection for grafting qualities.
This material would be used by seed companies, vegetable grafting companies and watermelon growers as a rootstock for growing susceptible watermelon cultivars (scion) in soils infested by the watermelon Fusarium wilt pathogen and root knot nematodes.
